About

Why this artist matters now

Kenneth Callahan was an American painter and printmaker whose abstractions emerged from close observation of Pacific Northwest landscapes and indigenous forms. Active from the 1930s through the 1980s, he developed a distinctive vocabulary of biomorphic shapes and muted earth tones that mediated between representation and pure abstraction. His work appeared regularly in major American museums and shaped the aesthetic of West Coast modernism during the postwar period.
