Joyce Wieland was a Canadian painter, filmmaker, and sculptor whose practice ranged across abstraction, figuration, and political allegory during the postwar period. Working primarily in oil, watercolor, and mixed media, she created large-scale canvases that addressed themes of Canadian identity, environmentalism, and feminine subjectivity with formal directness and lyrical color. Her films and sculptural works demonstrated equal ambition and formal innovation. Wieland maintained a studio practice in Toronto and New York throughout her career until her death in 1998.
