About

Why this artist matters now

Shirazeh Houshiary makes sculpture, painting, and video that move between biomorphic form and near-invisible geometric pattern drawn from 13th-century Arabic poetry. Her monochromatic canvases and monumental anodized aluminum towers hold Islamic calligraphy, Sufi cosmology, and Western abstraction in sustained tension. She emerged in the early 1980s alongside British sculptors Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, and Anish Kapoor.
