Julie Mehretu makes large-scale, multi-layered paintings in which abstracted urban landscapes accumulate into dense, dynamic compositions. Working across painting, drawing, and print, she builds imagery that registers the cumulative pressures of sociopolitical change on cities and their architectures. Born in Addis Ababa and based in the United States, her practice operates at a scale that transforms architectural notation and cartographic mark-making into something closer to atmospheric turbulence. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, among other major institutions.
