John Moffat was a Scottish painter and photographer who worked across both media during photography's emergence as a serious artistic practice in the nineteenth century. Based in Edinburgh, he navigated the technical and aesthetic challenges of early photographic processes while maintaining a parallel practice in painting. Active from the 1840s through the 1880s, Moffat's dual engagement with paint and lens positioned him at a pivotal moment in the medium's cultural legitimation.
