Why this artist matters now
Clovis Trouille was a French painter and sculptor whose darkly comic imagery combined surrealist sensibility with erotic and macabre subject matter. Working from the 1920s onward, he developed a visual language of distorted anatomies, carnival theatricality, and provocative figuration that resisted surrealist orthodoxy. His formal precision made the disturbing intimate and the obscene strangely meticulous, engaging transgressive themes through a controlled hand that set his work apart from his contemporaries.
