Charles Despiau was a French sculptor whose work combined classical figuration with a restrained modernist sensibility. Active as both a carver and modeler, he developed a distinctive approach to portraiture and the human form that influenced French sculpture across the early twentieth century. Beyond sculpture, Despiau worked extensively as a draftsman, graphic artist, and book illustrator, bringing the same formal precision to his prints and drawings as to his three-dimensional work. He was also a significant teaching presence in Paris, shaping the next generation of sculptors.
