Willem Witsen was a Dutch painter and photographer associated with Amsterdam Impressionism whose muted urban landscapes and rural scenes reflect the aesthetic influence of James McNeill Whistler. Working primarily in Amsterdam, he developed a practice centered on quiet observation of city streets and agricultural terrain, alongside portraiture and documentary photography of figures in the Amsterdam art world. His photographs of contemporary artists, including French Symbolist poet Paul Verlaine, form an important visual record of late nineteenth-century artistic circles.
