Rouben Ter-Arutunian was an American set and costume designer whose sparse, modernist environments prioritized the dancer's body over narrative spectacle. Working primarily with choreographer George Balanchine at New York City Ballet, he developed a visual language of geometric forms, minimal props, and strategic lighting that became definitive for postwar American dance. His designs combined classical restraint with abstract reduction, allowing movement to remain the central subject of performance.
