Anton Raphael Mengs was a German painter of the eighteenth century working primarily in fresco and oil on canvas. His practice encompassed religious commissions, portraiture, and large-scale decorative schemes across European courts and churches. Based in Ústí nad Labem, he executed ambitious mural cycles and formal court portraits that established him as a leading decorative painter of the Rococo and early Neoclassical periods.
