Umberto Boccioni was an Italian painter and sculptor who articulated Futurism's aesthetic of dynamic form and fragmented mass. His paintings decomposed solid objects into vectors of movement and energy, making visible the velocity and force of modern life. A principal theorist and practitioner of the movement, Boccioni's relatively brief career established visual strategies that influenced sculptors and painters across the twentieth century. His works are held in major public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
