Shadow’s Crossing (玄黙)
Keizo SugitaniWW-2018-132286

This ceramic sculpture consists of abstract shapes inter-locked in a complex formation. Sugitani Keizo used a highly valued clay from the Shigaraki region of Japan to make each part, which he then covered with dark-gray and black glazes. He has created numerous sculptures in this way, each with its own unusual silhouette. His structures usually stand tall, often featuring profiles that resemble the human form. Sugitani’s work aligns with the modernist and abstract movement in Japanese sculpture famously championed by Isamu Noguchi.
