Painting
Ryan Sullivan’s abstract paintings often bear a resemblance to slabs of concrete in their texture. His chromatic paintings feature a range of gestural strokes and swirling patterns composed of layers of materials including pigment, resin, fiberglass, and epoxy. Often untitled or bearing only the date of construction as in December 28, 2010 - January 8, 2011 (2011), the works seem to have been created to capture a mood and bear out their own physical potential. A BFA graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Sullivan spent time working as a studio assistant for influential painters including Laura Owens and Ross Bleckner. Sullivan’s sought-after works are included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Hammer Museum, and the Rubell Museum.
