New York-based painter Dan Walsh has developed a quirky style of minimalism that blends rigid geometry with a sense of play. The self-taught artist uses line as a way to study the application of paint, combining short, transparent strokes to create grids, patterns, and rhythms, all rendered with a looseness of hand. Visually complex, though simple in their execution, the images reveal their creation and revel in the imperfection of the human touch. “When an artist offers less information, the thoughts of the viewer are more active. In a minimal situation, you have less information—especially narrative qualities—and are left with a few elemental forms,” Walsh has said. “I call myself a maximalist now: getting the most out of the least.”
