Painting
Donald Moffett extends the traditional two-dimensional frame of the canvas, turning its flat plane into a rich ground for highly textured relief works and intricate constructions that incorporate video projections. Ranging from landscape and nature to politics and history, Moffett's subjects fuse poetry, humor, and provocation. “Sometimes you just need a hole, a smudge or an X,” Moffett explains, “and then at other times—you really need the whole hog.” Moffett explores an interest in the intersection of the ecstatic and the secular, using sound and light in conjunction with his paintings to create an ambiance more reminiscent of the Renaissance than the current world. Moffett is deeply engaged with contemporary gay rights issues, and has produced projects examining gay subculture and homosexuals in the military.
