Rifat Chadirji

Rifat Chadirji was an Iraqi architect and designer who developed a modernist vocabulary responsive to the climate, materials, and spatial traditions of the Middle East. Working primarily in Baghdad from the 1950s onward, he designed residential and institutional buildings that integrated traditional courtyard principles with contemporary construction methods, emphasizing natural ventilation, thick walls, and locally sourced brick and stone. His practice bridged European modernism and regional building culture during Iraq's postwar urban expansion.
