Dan Sandin is an American artist and engineer born in 1942 who pioneered video synthesis and electronic art in the 1960s and 1970s. Working at the University of Illinois, he developed the Sandin Image Processor, a custom analog synthesizer for real-time video manipulation that became instrumental in establishing video art as a distinct medium. His practice merged technological innovation with aesthetic experimentation, creating abstract moving images through direct electronic intervention rather than recording or editing existing footage. Sandin's work established foundational methods for generative and electronic abstraction that influenced subsequent generations of video and digital artists.
