Artist

Lucebert was a Dutch painter and poet who emerged in the postwar Netherlands as a founding figure of the CoBrA movement, which rejected geometric abstraction in favor of expressive, figurative work rooted in Nordic and tribal art. His paintings combine gestural abstraction with biomorphic forms and vivid color, often incorporating text and poetic language directly onto the canvas. Working across painting, drawing, and printmaking, Lucebert maintained a practice that resisted categorical definition, moving fluidly between figuration and abstraction throughout his career.
