Painting
Alan Sonfist is an American artist whose practice centers on environmental restoration and land reclamation as sculptural and conceptual work. Beginning in the 1970s, he initiated site-specific interventions that reclaimed neglected urban and suburban landscapes, transforming them into ecological and historical monuments. His Time Landscape project in New York City, begun in 1978, restored a section of lower Manhattan to its pre-colonial forest state through decades of careful planting and cultivation. Sonfist's work treats ecological recovery as both aesthetic experience and social intervention, establishing a model for art that functions simultaneously as environmental activism and historical testimony.
