Painting
Giuseppe Capogrossi was an Italian painter and sculptor who developed a distinctive abstract language based on repetitive linear marks and combed or scratched surfaces, often applied to canvas or relief forms. Active in postwar Rome, he created works that combined gestural abstraction with a systematic, almost architectural approach to mark-making. His vocabulary of parallel lines, rhythmic grooves, and interlocking patterns evolved throughout the 1950s and 1960s into increasingly monumental compositions. Capogrossi's work occupied a singular position between gestural abstraction and constructive order, distinct from both the spontaneity of Art Informel and the rigid geometry of Concrete art.
