Saburo Murakami

Saburo Murakami was a Japanese artist and founding member of the Gutai movement, the postwar collective that pioneered performative abstraction and experimental materials in Japan during the 1950s. Working across painting, sculpture, and installation, Murakami challenged the boundary between object and action, creating works that emphasized spontaneity, bodily gesture, and unconventional materials. His practice was central to Gutai's assertion of artistic freedom in the aftermath of World War II.
