Frederick Sommer was an American photographer and printmaker whose abstract compositions emerged from close study of natural forms and found materials. Working primarily in black and white photography from the 1930s onward, he created intricate images of rocks, vegetation, and weathered surfaces that dissolved conventional distinctions between landscape and abstraction.
