Hans Wegner

Hans Wegner was a Danish furniture designer and maker associated with Organic Functionalism. He studied at the Danish Institute of Technology, Copenhagen, and later trained in cabinetmaking at the School of Arts and Crafts, Copenhagen. His career began initially working as a furniture designer in the architectural offices of Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller. From 1940 to 1960, he collaborated with the cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen. He also designed for Fritz Hansen, Carl Hansen and Søn and Knoll International. Utilizing reference points such as historical types, traditional joints and structures, and honest materials, Wegner approached Modernism quite differently than his counterparts. Wegner created gentle and approachable modern furniture.
