Russell Drysdale was an Australian painter who depicted the arid interior and rural communities of inland Australia with a distinctive expressionist intensity. Working primarily in oil, he rendered the Australian outback and its inhabitants, station workers, Aboriginal figures, isolated homesteads, as psychologically charged, austere compositions that rejected the romantic landscape tradition. His work became a defining visual language for postwar Australian art, establishing the inland interior as a subject of cultural and artistic significance.
