Gaston Chaissac
Painting
Gaston Chaissac was a French painter and sculptor whose raw, gestural abstractions emerged from the postwar milieu of the 1940s and 1950s. Working in oil on canvas and carved wood, he developed a distinctive vocabulary of organic forms and bold graphic marks that resisted both geometric abstraction and figuration. His practice privileged immediacy and material directness, building compositions from layered pigment and sculptural mass.
