Photography

Dorothy Norman was an American photographer, writer, and editor whose work spanned documentary portraiture, landscape, and abstract photographic experimentation across seven decades. Active from the 1930s onward, she developed a distinctive approach to black-and-white photography that combined formal rigor with intimate observation of both natural and urban subjects. She was also a significant editor and advocate for modernist photography and experimental arts in America.
