Childerly Chapel Photograph Album

Childerly Chapel was commissioned by the Crane family for their estate in Wheeling, Illinois, and was completed in 1926. Although the architect of the chapel is unknown, the interiors were finished with painting and sculpture by André Derain and Alfeo Faggi. This album of eleven mounted black-and-white photographs depicts the chapel, Derain’s painting Last Supper of 1911 and Faggi’s sculpture Holy Child, two standing sculptures of St. Francis, and his well-known Stations of the Cross.

<a href=""http://digital-libraries.artic.edu/cdm/search/collection/findingaids/searchterm/Childerly%20Chapel%20Photograph%20Album/field/title/mode/all/conn/and/cosuppress/1"">View finding aid.

Collection access:
Collections may be accessed in the Franke Reading Room of the Research Center at The Art Institute of Chicago, by appointment only. Painting
A ndré Derain, a central force in the birth of Fauvism, revolutionized modern art through his bold use of flattened forms and electrifying color, developed alongside Henri Matisse in the early 1900s. Though he later embraced classicism, his influence endures, with works in major museums worldwide and top auction prices—such as Arbres à Collioure reaching $24 million—underscoring his lasting impact on 20th-century art.
