Louis Vivin

Louis Vivin was a French self-taught painter who worked as a postal clerk in Paris while developing a practice rooted in meticulous detail and naive representation. His cityscapes and still lifes, executed in oil and gouache, employ a flattened perspective and jewel-like precision that anticipates aspects of modernist formalism while remaining distinct from avant-garde movements of his era. Working largely outside institutional recognition until late in life, Vivin built compositions through accumulated observation rather than formal training, creating densely rendered urban views of Paris and its surroundings. His work was championed by key modernist figures including Pablo Picasso and the Surrealists, who valued his unschooled directness and the psychological charge of his tightly ordered surfaces.
