H.L. Mencken

Miguel Covarrubias was a Mexican painter, illustrator, and muralist whose work synthesized pre-Columbian and modernist aesthetics. Active from the 1920s through the 1950s, he created bold graphic compositions and public murals that engaged with Mexican identity and indigenous cultural forms. His illustrations and paintings combined flattened perspective with dynamic line work, establishing a distinctive visual language that bridged fine art and commercial design.
