Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven was a German-born sculptor and poet active in early twentieth-century New York who worked primarily in found materials and discarded objects. Her assemblages and readymades anticipated strategies that would become central to Dada and avant-garde practice, though her contributions were largely eclipsed during her lifetime and the decades following her death in 1927. Working across sculpture, collage, and performance, she constructed provocative forms from urban detritus, creating a body of work that challenged conventional notions of artistic material and feminine creativity.
