1912·Color etching, aquatint, soft ground, and drypoint on ivory wove paper·Image, trimmed within platemark: 67 × 31.3 cm (26 7/16 × 12 3/8 in.); Sheet: 70.6 × 35 cm (27 13/16 × 13 13/16 in.)

In this work, the artist merged classical imagery of the personification of Dawn and a group of bathing nymphs with a dense veil of foliage and fog. The largest and in many ways most ambitious of Roussel’s prints, Dawn was created from 13 copper and zinc plates; the plate dedicated to the figure at the top was taken through ten states. This finished impression retains narrow margins showing the registration lines used to guide the multiplate printing process.
