Léon Spilliaert was a Belgian painter and draughtsman whose work ranged from symbolist portraiture and interior scenes to coastal landscapes rendered in muted, often monochromatic palettes. Active from the early 1900s through the mid-twentieth century, he developed a distinctive approach to light and shadow that emphasized psychological mood over descriptive detail.
