Charity (La Charité)

Alphonse Legros was a French-born printmaker and painter who settled in Britain and became a leading figure in the revival of etching as a fine art medium during the late nineteenth century. Working primarily in etching, drypoint, and lithography, he produced a substantial body of work characterized by precise draftsmanship and often somber religious and allegorical subjects. He taught at the Slade School of Art in London, where he significantly influenced the next generation of British printmakers. His technical mastery and commitment to traditional printmaking methods established him as a central figure in the etching renaissance of his era.
