Francesco Hayez was an Italian history painter and portraitist whose monumental canvases defined the romantic nationalist aesthetic of 19th-century Europe. Working primarily in oil on canvas, he depicted classical and contemporary subjects with theatrical staging, vivid color, and psychological intensity. His large-scale historical compositions and society portraits established him as a central figure in the transition from neoclassicism to romanticism in Italian art. Hayez maintained an active studio practice across a six-decade career spanning the Austro-Hungarian occupation and the unification of Italy.
