Léopold Robert was a Swiss painter of the nineteenth century known for large-scale historical and genre compositions. Active in the early 1800s, he worked primarily in oil and developed a reputation for dramatic narrative scenes drawn from Italian peasant life and classical subjects. His work engaged with Romantic ideals of social observation and picturesque subject matter.
