Panoramic View of Antwerp from the East

Jan Wildens was a Flemish painter of landscapes and historical scenes active in Antwerp during the seventeenth century. He specialized in panoramic woodland and river views rendered in muted earth tones, often populated with small figural narratives drawn from classical or biblical sources. His compositions employ atmospheric perspective and a structured recession into depth characteristic of Northern European landscape painting of the period. Wildens collaborated with Peter Paul Rubens on large-scale commissions, contributing landscape backgrounds to Rubens' figure-driven compositions.
