Carolus Clusius, Professor of Botany at Leyden

Jacques de Gheyn II was a Dutch draughtsman and printmaker renowned for his precise pen drawings and etchings of botanical specimens, insects, and anatomical studies. Active in Amsterdam during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, he brought scientific observation and meticulous line work to subjects that ranged from flora and fauna to military fortifications and historical scenes. His drawings established a model for naturalistic representation that bridged art and natural philosophy. His technical facility with the pen and burin made him influential among subsequent generations of Northern European artists.
