Two Women and a Girl

Ruth Gikow was an American painter and printmaker active in the postwar period whose work engaged abstraction and figuration in equal measure. Working primarily in oil, watercolor, and lithography, she developed a modernist vocabulary rooted in urban observation and gestural mark-making. Gikow's practice bridged the gap between social realism and abstract expressionism, a formal negotiation distinctive to her generation of New York-based artists.
