Shirley Jaffe was an American abstract painter whose energetic, gestural compositions emerged from postwar color field and action painting traditions. Working primarily in acrylic and oil, she built layered, luminous surfaces that balance spontaneity with deliberate formal structure. Her canvases investigate the interplay of hue, transparency, and spatial depth through non-representational means. Active from the 1940s onward, Jaffe developed a sustained and independent practice across seven decades.
