About

Why this artist matters now

Pablo Palazuelo’s large-scale geometric abstract paintings and prints, often created in a limited two-tone palette, visualized the artist’s interest in mysticism, organic rhythms, and mathematical concepts like infinity. In Le Chaux de Fond (1972), the artist’s hard-edged, red and white forms resemble a close-up of a repetitive pattern that extends beyond the composition. Palazuelo was formally trained as an architect in Madrid, and later studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Oxford, where he encountered the architectural work of the Tecton Group, as well as the artwork of Duncan Grant and Jacob Epstein. Abandoning figuration in his work, he ultimately decided to pursue painting and moved to Paris in 1948. In 1954, Palazuelo created his first melted bronze sculpture; he had his first solo show the following year at Galerie Maeght, where he exhibited until the 1980s. A major retrospective of his work was held at the Museo Reina Sofía in 1995; his paintings are in the permanent collections of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Art Institute of Chicago.
