Guy de Cointet was an American artist and performer working across language, text, and theatrical gesture in the postwar period. His practice centered on absurdist performance pieces, visual poetry, and word-based installations that disrupted conventional meaning and grammar. De Cointet's work treated language as a material object, fragmenting and recombining words to expose the arbitrary relationship between signifier and referent. His interdisciplinary approach anticipated conceptual art's engagement with text and institutional critique.
