George Henry Boughton was an American painter of historical and literary scenes, working primarily in oil and watercolor during the nineteenth century. Born in 1833 and based for much of his career in Europe, he specialized in narrative compositions drawn from American colonial history and European literary sources, rendered in a romantic academic style. His work occupied a prominent place in Victorian art institutions and private collections.
