About

Why this artist matters now

Chris Ofili makes densely layered paintings on linen that incorporate glitter, resin, map pins, cut-out images, and elephant dung, the last deployed both as a painted surface element and as sculptural supports for unframed canvases. His work fuses psychedelic pattern, African diasporic iconography, and references to hip-hop and blaxploitation cinema. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1998 and has been the subject of major exhibitions at Tate Britain and the New Museum.
