David Wilkie was a Scottish painter celebrated for genre scenes depicting everyday life with narrative detail and psychological acuity. His practice ranged across history painting, formal portraiture, and travel studies from Europe and the Middle East, executed with equal facility. Based in London, he became known as the 'people's painter' for his ability to invest ordinary domestic moments with dignity and pathos. His work bridged the tradition of Dutch Golden Age narrative painting and the emerging Victorian sensibility toward social observation.
