About

Why this artist matters now

Ralph Eugene Meatyard was an American photographer working in black and white who created deliberately ambiguous, often unsettling domestic and suburban scenes populated by masked figures and his own family members. Based in Normal, Illinois, Meatyard employed soft focus, unusual framing, and props to generate a dreamlike visual language that blurred the boundary between documentary and constructed narrative. His work was included in the seminal MoMA exhibition Photographs for Collectors in 1960, establishing his significance within postwar American photography. His practice anticipated conceptual photography and performance-based image-making by more than a decade.
