Hiroshi Sugimoto makes large-format photographs of seascapes, theaters, and wax museums using long exposures and an austere compositional method that flattens perspective and renders subjects as timeless, almost abstracted forms. Based in Tokyo, he directs the New Material Research Laboratory, an architectural practice that extends his photographic investigation of space and material into built environments. His work collapses the boundary between documentary and constructed image, producing photographs that appear as much architectural drawing as captured light.
